Shiba Inu

In 1986, the Shiba Inu entered our lives, and things just haven't been the same since! We were looking for a smaller breed than the Akitas that our daughter Rowan could show herself (she was 4 at the time and already going into PeeWee handling) and "Gin" became our first Shiba Inu.

This was prior to CKC breed recognition, so we busied ourselves with obedience and matches. It soon became obvious that Gin was not show material, and while she never attained any titles or recognition, she was a beloved family member for 15 years, and taught us so much about the breed.

By now we were bitten by the Shiba bug - and "Smidge" from Jade Shogun kennels (Tiare Arndt) joined us. She was a breeder's dream foundation bitch: typey, sound, and a lovely pedigree. She was bred to a Japanese import, and the resulting litter was the start of SunoJo Shiba Inu. Our Shibas have been in the Canadian Top 5 almost every year since recognition, have won both Canadian and US Specialties, multiple Group wins and placements, multiple Best Puppy in Show, and our male "Player" was the first Canadian bred Shiba to have won Best in Show. More recently, "Dash" became the ONLY Shiba to win both the National Specialty and a Best in Show. It had been 11 years since a Shiba had gone Best in Show, and what really made it special for us is that Player's dam 'Mitsu' is Dash's great great granddam.

We are even more proud of the role our Shibas have had in establishing the breed as a lovely companion and combatting the previous image of the Shiba as a difficult dog. Our pet people constantly report that vets, groomers and the general public are surprised that a Shiba "could be so wonderful".
